By Will Hunter, Founder of Rent with Thred • Updated August 2026 • Thred proprietary rental analysis
The easiest way to misread rental data is to rank products by total rentals and stop there. A piece with four units in circulation should have more opportunities to be rented than a piece with one. Inventory-adjusted demand asks a better question: how many distinct customers did each unit of inventory reach over time?
To reduce the distortion from very new products with only a few months of exposure, this ranking requires at least 12 reconstructed unit-months in Thred’s source model.

Alex Crane’s Canvas Cham Pants Led the Stable-Efficiency Cut
The Alex Crane Canvas Cham Pants in Chai reached 37 unique customers across 13 unit-months, or 2.85 customer turns per unit-month. That was the strongest result among products with at least 12 unit-months of exposure.
Faherty’s Range Down Vest Was Another Standout
The Faherty Range Down Vest in Drill Khaki reached 28 unique customers across 12 unit-months, producing 2.33 customer turns per unit-month.
Efficiency Changes the Buying Conversation
Raw volume can tell an operator to buy more of whatever already dominates the assortment. Efficiency can reveal where a smaller inventory position is working unusually hard. That is often the better signal for the next incremental inventory dollar.
Why We Added a Minimum Exposure Threshold
Products with only three or five unit-months can post extraordinary efficiency numbers from a small denominator. Those results are useful for spotting early momentum, but they are less stable. Requiring at least 12 unit-months makes this list more conservative.
What This Metric Does Not Capture
Customer turns per unit-month is not a profitability metric. It does not include garment acquisition cost, cleaning, shipping, damage, resale recovery or contribution margin. It is one demand-efficiency measure, not a complete unit-economics model.
Methodology and What This Data Can—and Cannot—Tell Us
This analysis uses Rent with Thred’s inventory-adjusted product ranking covering October 2024 through July 2026. The source model matched 14,692 of 17,625 eligible rental selections to reconstructed inventory exposure, or 83.4% of eligible selections. Known subscription products and non-garment items were excluded.
The ranked dataset contains 150 eligible products with reliable non-negative reconstructed inventory history. Inventory exposure is measured in unit-months, meaning one unit held in inventory for one month. Because this is a ranked operational sample rather than 100% of every garment ever carried, totals in these articles should be read as evidence from the matched sample, not as full-catalog market share.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a unit-month?
One unit held in inventory for one month. Two units held for six months equal twelve unit-months.
Why use unique customers instead of selections?
Unique customers reduces the impact of the same people repeatedly selecting a product and helps answer how broadly the inventory reached the member base. Selection turns are also tracked separately.
The Bottom Line
The best inventory is not necessarily the product with the highest rental count. It is the product that creates strong customer demand relative to the amount of capital tied up in keeping it available.
